Short course description

Content of the short-term learning experience

Overview of EU strategies for sustainable and circular textiles. Presentation of the different types of textile materials and textile waste. Presentation of the Waste Management Directive and the waste management hierarchy. Technological possibilities of direct processing of textile waste, preparation of material for recycling, separation and characterisation, pre-treatment. Overview of current textile recycling technologies: mechanical recycling, thermomechanical recycling, thermochemical recycling, chemical recycling, enzymatic recycling. Advantages and disadvantages of the individual technologies. Quality and utilisation of the recyclates obtained. An overview of sustainable recycling technologies that can effectively recycle complex textile waste (such as cotton-polyester blends) and represent a transition to a circular economy.
